Literature review "draft report"
Whatever you submit - you will get feedback on it. The following guidelines are an orientation. If you follow them, it will help provide feedback, since it is easier to comment on 55 students' documents at various stages throughout the module (draft report, nearly finished report, final report) if they are roughly similar at least in terms of their structure.
Recommended content
- The number of references should be between 12 and 24, and they should all be journal articles, conference papers, or contributed chapters in edited volumes.
- Ask your master thesis advisor for the three (or so) most relevant papers that are a must read for your work - then proceed from there. If your advisor cannot competently do this, change your advisor to somebody competent on the topic, or change your topic to something that the advisor is competent on.
- Do not cite anything that you just briefly looked at, or found during a search and had a nice-looking title. Instead, do select the relevant literature carefully, read it, and state in your report how it is relevant.
- Do not narrate others' work. Instead, do look at it from your perspective - it will be different from the original authors' perspective. Where 99% of a cited paper are irrelevant to your perspective, your reader does not need to be told about these parts, only about the 1% relevant information.
Recommended format
- Use the LaTeX article class with 11pt font size in A4 paper format.
- Use BibTeX for your literature and, for formatting the references, follow common practice in the field; i.e., look how your cited papers usually reference their cited papers and emulate that - this will make you look most professional.
The "draft report" (and "nearly finished report") are part of the DAT390 course specification, therefore, please submit something rather than nothing. If you are not submitting the "draft report" for a good reason, please briefly sort with the course instructor ahead of the deadline to make sure that this is approved.
(submit through Canvas by end of 6th October 2023)
